12×40 mesh granular activated carbon is specifically designed for use in water purification filter cartridges. With a high iodine value and strong adsorption capacity, it effectively removes residual chlorine, unpleasant odors, color, and organic contaminants from water. Its uniform particle size ensures low flow resistance, allowing smooth water passage while maintaining excellent filtration performance. This product is suitable for both household and industrial water treatment systems, providing reliable and consistent purification results.
12×40 granular activated carbon / chlorine and odor removal / high-efficiency adsorption / customizable specifications
The manufacturing of 12x40 mesh activated carbon involves a sophisticated thermo-chemical process designed to develop its internal pore structure.
Raw Material Selection: Premium sources such as coconut shells, bituminous coal, or wood are selected.
Carbonization: The raw material is heated in the absence of air at temperatures around 500-600°C to drive off volatile components, creating a primary carbon skeleton.
Steam Activation: The carbonized material is "activated" in a rotary kiln or fluidized bed at high temperatures (800-1000°C) using steam or CO2 as the activating agent. This creates the vast internal network of pores.
Crushing & Screening: The bulk activated carbon is mechanically crushed and precisely screened using vibration sieves to meet the 12x40 mesh (1.70mm to 0.425mm) specification.
De-dusting & Packaging: The final product undergoes air-washing to remove "fines" (dust) before being sealed in moisture-proof bags.
The 12x40 grade is defined by its specific physical and microscopic architecture:
Optimized Pore Distribution: It features a balanced distribution of micropores (<2 nm) for gas/small molecule adsorption and mesopores (2-50 nm) for liquid-phase impurities.
High Specific Surface Area: The activation process yields an internal surface area typically ranging from 900 to 1,100 m2/g.
Specific Particle Geometry: The 12x40 mesh size offers a "golden ratio" between particle surface area and void space, which is critical for fluid dynamics.
Rigid Matrix: Especially in coconut-shell varieties, the carbon possesses a high Hardness Number, ensuring the granules do not break down under high-pressure flow.
Why is 12x40 the most popular specification in the global market?
Superior Filtration Kinetics: The particle size is small enough to provide a large external surface area for rapid adsorption, yet large enough to maintain excellent flow rates.
Low Pressure Drop: Compared to finer grades (like 30x60), 12x40 mesh allows liquids and gases to pass through with minimal resistance, reducing energy costs for pumps and blowers.
Extended Service Life: Due to its high mechanical strength, it can withstand multiple backwashing cycles in water treatment systems without significant material loss.
Versatility: It is the "all-rounder" of activated carbon, equally effective in point-of-use (POU) water filters and large-scale industrial wastewater plants.
Cost-Effectiveness: Its high adsorption capacity per gram means less frequent media replacement, lowering the overall Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

1.Household water purifier filters (most common application)
It is widely used as the core filter media in household countertop, under-sink and faucet-mounted water purifiers. It efficiently removes residual chlorine, unpleasant odors, color, organic contaminants and some pesticides, greatly improving water taste and safety for daily drinking and cooking.
2.Industrial water treatment
Suitable for water purification equipment in restaurants, hotels, schools and factories. It supports stable operation with low flow resistance, effectively purifying process water, circulating water and drinking water for public and industrial use.
3.Whole-house and commercial water purification
Applied in pre-filters and post-filters for whole-house water treatment, it treats incoming tap water at the main supply line, reducing chlorine, sediment and odor to provide clean water for the entire household.
4.Water Filter Cartridges for Drinking Fountains & Water Dispensers
Used in replaceable filter cartridges to maintain consistent water quality, remove odor and off-taste, and ensure safe and fresh drinking water.
Q: How to choose between coconut shell carbon and coal-based carbon? Which is better?
A: Household water purification (pursuing taste and safety): Coconut shell carbon is preferred. It features high hardness, low ash content and well-developed micropores, delivering the best performance in removing residual chlorine and odor, with purer water and sweeter taste.Industrial or low-cost scenarios: Coal-based carbon is optional. It is cost-effective with well-developed mesopores, advantageous for adsorbing macromolecular organic matters, but has higher ash content and may bring slight astringent taste to the effluent.
Q: Why is the effluent black after installing a new filter? Is it normal?
A: It is normal but requires pretreatment.Fine carbon powder is produced by friction during transportation and filling of activated carbon. When used for the first time, these carbon powders will be washed out by water, causing black effluent in the first few minutes.Correct operation: Rinse the granular carbon (or the whole filter) with clean water in reverse direction until the effluent becomes clear before installation. After installation, drain water for 5-10 minutes until the effluent is clear before drinking.
Q: What pollutants can it mainly remove?
A: It can effectively remove residual chlorine, odor, organic matters, pigments and part of pesticides in water, and improve water taste, but does not directly sterilize.
