Manganese sand is an efficient and economical media for reducing dissolved iron and manganese compounds in raw water. It can be used in gravity-fed or pressurized water treatment systems.
Manganese sand filter media acts as an insoluble catalyst, enhancing the reaction between dissolved oxygen and iron compounds. In groundwater, dissolved iron is usually in the ferrous carbonate state and cannot be filtered due to excess free carbon dioxide. Manganese sand filter media acts as a catalyst between oxygen and soluble iron compounds, enhancing the oxidation reaction of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and producing iron hydroxide, which precipitates and is easily filtered.
The physical properties of manganese sand make it an excellent filter media, and the precipitate can be easily removed by back washing. Manganese sand filter media is not consumed in the iron removal operation, which gives it a huge economic advantage over many other iron removal methods.

Water with too high iron and manganese content is generally oxidized into insoluble trivalent iron or tetravalent manganese compounds by using a catalyst (such as manganese sand) to remove and purify the dissolved divalent iron or divalent manganese.
